Product Info
This sublime and rare antique pansy brooch/pendant by A.J. Hedges utilizes their patented method of combining different colors of gold to great effect.
Here, it is used emulate the variegation of colors found on flower petals in nature. The upper two petals are yellow gold with greyish/white gold along the edges, with the white gold seemingly bleeding towards the center. The bottom three petals are also yellow gold, but on these petals both pink and white gold are swirled together as an inset pattern.
All the petals have a pebbled texture with engraved striations along their rims and long lines radiating out from the central stone. The brooch/pendant has its original pin back with tube hinge and "C" clasp and its original non-pivoting fold-down bale.
A.J. Hedges and Co. were one of the great jewelry manufacturers in Newark, New Jersey during the last couple of decades of the 19th century and the first half of the twentieth century. According to The Glitter and the Gold, Fashioning America’s Jewelry in 1879 Hedges received a patent for making jewelry out of mottled multicolor gold. After much searching I found the patent and have attached it. While the brooch/pendant does not have the A.J. Hedges maker's mark on it, it does have the patent number in two places on the back confirming that it is by Hedges.
