In the hands of an artist something as mundane as a pebble can be turned into a work of art. Here, the great studio jeweler Betty Cooke has taken a flat pebble and etched circular patterns into it and suspended it from an asymmetric hammered silver choker.

The title of a recent monograph about Betty Cooke by Jeannine Falino is The Circle and the Line, the Jewelry of Betty Cooke, and this necklace demonstrates how Cooke masterfully combines these simple elements into an elegant piece of jewelry.

Betty Cooke (1924-present) is one of the last remaining mid-20^th century studio jewelers. She is known for her minimalist designs which combine simple forms into elegant sculptural jewelry. The book mentioned above was published by the Walters Art Museum in conjunction with an exhibit of her work.
