Product Info
David Thomas (1938-) is a British goldsmith who began his career working for the legendary Swedish crown jewelers Bolin, going on to set up his own studio in the early 1960’s. He is known for the high quality of his workmanship.
Some of Thomas’s most characteristic work, like this brooch, is made from a tracery of microwelded fine gold wires with the tiny globules that connect the wires used as decorative elements. His work was featured in the seminal 1961 International Exhibition of Modern Jewellery at Goldsmith’s Hall in London, and appeared in Graham Hughes’ book Modern Jewelry: An International Survey, which grew out of the exhibition.
This large brooch resembles a fantastical sea creature, and is strikingly three-dimensional. At the tips of the fine gold wires that make up the structure of the brooch are perched diamonds and sapphires.
