This exquisite Georgian chain has an impressed pattern of interlocking circles and a bulbous clasp, both of which give it a surprisingly modern feel.

Georgian chains are light for their size, as is the case here, with goldsmiths literally stretching their materials since they were hard to obtain due to wars impacting trade. The links were made by hand-rolling the gold over a die with the pattern and then shaping and individually soldering each link.

When I acquired this chain it had been cut up into multiple sections and made into a modern style, multi-strand bracelet; luckily, the original clasp and several unused links had been saved and kept with it, so I was able to have my bench jeweler reassemble it. However, the soldering that was required to do this, and the previous work from its incarnation as a bracelet, resulted in any patina of age that it might have acquired over two centuries being lost, so it has a bright new surface finish. It also lost some length over the years, but is still a nice wearable 30-1/2" long.
