When two masters of design combine their genius magic happens, as in the case of this superb necklace by Bjorn Weckstrom and Bernd Munsteiner.

Bernd Munsteiner (1943 -) is a revolutionary in the world of gem cutting and invented what is known as the “fantasy cut”, non-traditional cuts made on the back side of gemstones to create spectacular effects. One of Munsteiner’s most famous works is the Dom Pedro aquamarine sculpture, at 10,363 carats the largest cut aquamarine in the world and now in the collection of the Smithsonian. Created in 1993, the Dom Pedro was clearly an inspiration for the long rectangular aquamarine that Munsteiner cut for this necklace two years later, and I have included a photo of the necklace next to a photo of the Dom Pedro in the monograph Bernd Munsteiner, Reflections in Stone.

The necklace was designed by Bjorn Weckstom of Lapponia in 18 karat gold to beautifully highlight the stone. Unlike most Lapponia jewelry, this necklace was produced in a limited edition of only 35 pieces. Bjorn Weckstrom is one of the most important jewelry designers of the 20^th century.  He is a sculptor who looks upon jewelry as “miniature sculpture with the human body in the background”, “drawing his inspiration from the shape and matte surface of gold nuggets from Finnish Lapland” as stated on the Lapponia website.
