Halley's comet was visible in 1759, 1835, 1910,and 1986 and this brooch dates from shortly after its 1835 appearance.

The icy nucleus of the comet is represented by a cluster of faceted paste stones set in finely-made silver crimped cut-back collet settings; the tail of the comet is 18 karat gold and terminates in a small paste stone. 

The brooch was made in France and has its original "C" clasp, tube hinge, and pin that extends beyond the clasp.

  • Materials:

    Silver, 18 karat gold, paste

  • Size:

    1-1/8" long with the pin extending 3/16" beyond the tail of the comet. The round cluster of paste stones is 3/4" in diameter

  • Marks:

    The French horse head hallmarks for 18 karat gold and the French bigorne countermark.

  • Age:

    Circa 1838. The horse head hallmark began to be used in 1838 and it's likely that it was made around this time

  • Condition:

    The paste stones are vibrant and sparkly. When looked at under magnification there are small nicks to the stones.
