Product Info
From 1932-34 a very young (age 18-20) Karl Gustav Hansen designed around 200 pieces of avant garde jewelry for his father, Hans Hansen, and this brooch is among them. The jewelry of this style and period is sometimes referred to as "Functionalist" or "Machine Age Art Deco" and is characterized by clean lines and stripped-down forms and decoration, a precursor to Modernism.
In this brooch, two square bars of silver form the base of the piece and grasp a silver ball in their curves resulting in both tension and freedom. Examples of this brooch are featured on pages 80 of Simply Danish, Silver Jewellery 20th Century and on page 39 of The Jewellery Box, Danish Jewellery Art of the 20th Century.
Hans Hansen was a Danish workshop founded by Hans Hansen is 1906 and carried on by his son Karl Gustav Hansen (1914-2002) in 1940. In 1992 the firm merged with the Georg Jensen silversmithy.
