This "Omena" pendant (which translates to apple) is an iconic design by Tapio Wirkkala. Created from hammered silver, the core of the apple is kinetic.

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a pioneer of Finnish modernism and a major figure in post-war European design. In addition to jewelry, he designed glassware, stoneware, and furniture, and even the Finlandia vodka bottle! Wirrkala received many awards including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale and the Lunning Prize. While many of his glass designs were widely produced, his jewelry is quite rare.

  • Size:

    Pendant is 1-1/2" across x 1-13/16" high including the bale. Chain is 24" long. Note: this is the smaller size of this pendant which was also made in a larger size.

  • Marks:

    A seated lion which is the maker's mark for Kultakeskus Oy, who manufactured jewelry designed by Wirkkala; "925" with scales, indicating sterling silver; a crown inside a heart, the Finnish national mark; and "X7" (the "&" is a partial strike), which is the Finnish date mark for 1975. In addition, the chain has the maker's mark of Finnish company Kupitaan Kulta and "925".
