Product Info
A cluster of leaves and tendrils are punctuated by chrysoprase cabochons in this early brooch by Theodor Fahrner. According to Theodor Fahrner Jewelry, between Avantegarde and Tradition this early leaf motif jewelry was influenced by Wiener Werkstatte jewelry and very popular for Fahrner, although quite rare today. Similar pieces are shown on pages 59, 145, and 146 of the book.
This brooch can also be worn as a pendant, as the tendril along the left edge of the photo is soldered into a closed loop and a chain could easily be slid through. The brooch has its original "C" clasp and tube hinge.
Theodor Fahrner was a German jewelry manufacturer particularly known for their Jugendstil (the German version of Art Nouveau) and Art Deco jewelry. They were based in Pforzheim, the jewelry-making capital of Germany. The company was founded in 1855 by Theodor Fahrner Sr., continued under his son Theodor Fahrner Jr., and acquired by one of the firm’s designers Gustav Braendle after Fahrner junior’s death in 1919. The firm remained in business until 1979. Fahrner was known as an “artist-manufacturer”, employing many well-known designers including Max Gradl, Hermann Haussler, Patriz Huber, Georg Kleemann, and Joseph Maria Olbrich. Fahrner also produced jewelry for other companies, most notably Murrle, Bennett & Co. of London.
