Mottled agate represents the markings on butterfly wings in this bold, yet delicate, Victorian brooch: bold because of its large scale, yet delicate because of its subject matter.

The agates are set in 14 karat gold. The brooch has its original "C" clasp, tube hinge, and pin stem.

  • Condition:

    Very good antique condition. There are a few surface-reaching natural inclusions in the agate. And there is an older, and very nicely done repair where the wings meet the body of the butterfly to reinforce them. The soldering is visible on the back side and a little bit along the edges if you look carefully. I believe that the engraved curved triangular pieces that hold the upper pair of wings are part of this repair, but were so nicely done that they appear to be original.
