Product Info

A gemstone-encrusted fly is perched on a concave gold oval in this exquisite French brooch. The fly has rose cut diamond wings set in silver, a cushion cut sapphire thorax, and a pearl abdomen. The eyes are a red gemstone too small to get an accurate reading. Other than the wings, which are silver-topped gold the brooch is high karat gold that tests above 18 karat.

    High karat gold (above 18k), diamonds, sapphire, pearl. The gemstones have not been tested by a gemologist not has the pearl been x-rayed, however the age of this brooch pre-dates the invention of synthetic sapphires and cultured pearls; since there is not evidence of their having been replaced, it is most likely that the sapphire and pearl are natural

    1-3/8" long x 3/4" high

    6.2 grams

  • Marks:

    There are French eagle assay marks on the "C" clasp and on the pin indicating that the gold is at least 18 karat; there is also a partial strike of a lozenge-shaped French maker's mark on the pin, but it is difficult to read.

    Mid-19th century

  • Condition:

    Excellent antique condition. There are some minor scuffs visible under magnification, but this piece is in excellent condition for its age.
