In the jewelry world “harlequin” refers to pieces of jewelry with multiple, seemingly random, colored stones and this sublime antique necklace is a wonderful example of the style.

It features colored sapphires, tourmalines, garnets, and other stones, all set in multi-prong settings with crown-like galleries and suspended from a gold loop-in-loop chain. The necklace dates to circa 1900, right on the edge of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

    Sapphire, tourmaline, garnet, peridot. The gold tests as between and 10 and 12 karat.

  • Condition:

    Very good antique condition. There are some kinks to the loop-on-loop chain and one stone is a replacement (the peridot shown in the photos as the top left stone is set in a silver crimped collet setting). There are some fine scratches and small nicks to the stones visible under magnification, but nothing that detracts from the beauty of this piece.
