This necklace, by the great Norwegian designer Tone Vigeland, is known as "Sol. According the the monograph Tone Vigeland: Jewelry, Object, Sculpture, "Sol" was designed by Vigeland in 1960 during her tenure at the Norway PLUS workshops and produced from 1960-1985. The "Sol" pendant comes on an original Norway PLUS neck ring
Tone Vigeland (1938-2024) is one of the most important Norwegian studio jewelers of the 20th century. From 1958-61 she worked for PLUS, the artisan cooperative founded by Per Tannum in 1958 and led by Erling Christoffersen and Anna Greta Eker.
Vigeland is known for her sculptural jewelry some of which, like this piece, are easily wearable and others of which are more challenging. Vigeland’s work is in the collections of many museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and the Cooper Hewitt and Museum of Modern Art in New York.
