Product Info
This large brooch by designer Eve Kaplin is kinetic and colorful, with dangling rings and adjustable riveted joints that allow it to be worn vertically or horizontally and in various widths and configurations. Though unsigned, this is a case where I have no qualms about making an attribution as this piece has all of her design hallmarks including mobile rings and riveted joints topped with colorful balls, many with a characteristic pebbled surface. There are three pieces of Kaplin's jewelry in the Cooper Hewitt Museum which can be seen HERE with similar design and construction; plus there's a Facebook page HERE showing lots of examples of her work.
Eve Kaplin was a jewelry designer known for colorful geometric pieces in a Memphis-influenced post-modern style. After attending the Rhode Island School of Design Kaplin moved to New York and began to produce the collections of jewelry for which she is known, which were called "Mechanical" and "Mobile". She died suddenly of an illness at age 28. Her company remained in business for about a decade after her death by her friend and business partner.
Kaplin's jewelry is in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
