Product Info

Silver ribbons emerge from black and white enamel swirls in this gorgeous set by Margot de Taxco. The set consists of a necklace, bracelet, brooch, and earrings. The design drawings for this set can be seen on page 175 of Margot Van Voorhies, The Art of Mexican Enamelwork by Penny Morrill.

Margot van Voorhies Carr (?-1985) was a pioneering woman jewelry designer who introduced the use of enamel into Mexican jewelry. After moving to Mexico in 1937 Margot married Antonio Castillo and became the principal designer for "Los Castillo:, her husband's family's business. After divorcing Castillo Margot opened "Margot de Taxco" in 1948 and remained in business until the mid-1970's.

    Sterling silver and enamel

  • Size:

    Necklace is 14-1/2" long; bracelet is 6-1/4" long; each earring and the brooch (along with each link of the bracelet) are 1-1/2" long x 1" wide.

  • Marks:

    "Margot de Taxco"; "Made in Mexico"; the Mexican eagle assay mark with the number inside not visible; and "5556", the design number

  • Age:

    Mid-20th century

  • Condition:

    All of the silver ribbons on all of the pieces have been soft soldered back on, suggesting a design flaw in how they were originally attached since the pieces are otherwise in excellent condition; even the enamel on the bracelet is in excellent condition which is where damage to Margot's pieces is frequently found.

    The soft soldering was nicely done, but is visible to the naked eye in some places. In addition, the silver ribbon on the bracelet link with the tongue of the clasp is missing.

    I believe that the brooch was made from a link on the bracelet.
