This marvelous and large brooch by William Comyns was originally a buckle and at some point in its long history converted to a brooch. The design features intertwining heart-shaped leaves and is similar to many of the Cymric designs that Archibald Knox did for Liberty. 

The Comyns company was founded in 1848 and is known for their Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts buckles. As is the case with this piece, they often cast their pieces and added hammering to the surface.

  • Marks:

    The piece has full British hallmarks including "W.C", the maker's mark for William Comyns; lion passant, the British mark indicating sterling silver; a leopard's head, indicating the London assay office; and a lower case "e", the date mark for 1900. There are additional marks on the back, probably design numbers.

  • Condition:

    Excellent condition, but it has been converted from a buckle to a brooch. It still retains all its original buckle fittings should the new owner with to convert it back to a buckle.
