Product Info
Sibyl Dunlop (1889 – 1968) was a late practitioner of the Arts and Crafts style in Britain, having opened her workshop in the 1920’s and lasting until a the outbreak of WWII (although a colleague re-opened the workshop after the war). She is known for work that bridged both the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco styles and for her “carpet of gems”, pieces that incorporated a variety of colored stones of different shapes, usually cabochon-cut.
Though unsigned, this glorious pendant exhibits all the characteristics of Dunlop's work, with its "carpet of gems" of carnelian, chrysoprase, blue chalcedony, and amethyst. A similar pair of earrings is shown on page 55 of Jewelry & Metalwork in the Arts and Crafts Tradition by Elyse Zorn Karlin, and was part of the collection of the renowned Tadema Gallery in London. The silver chain is not original to the pendant, but is a period-appropriate chain.
