Coppola e Toppo was an Italian costume jewelry company renowned for its collaborations with many of the greatest fashion designers of the 20th century. Founded by designer Lydia Coppola (1915-1986) in Milan in 1948, the company hand made extravagant pieces of jewelry from clusters of crystal beads, coral, and other materials. Some of the designers with which they collaborated incude Schiaparelli, Jacques Fath, Jeanne Lanvin, Balenciaga, Pucci, and Valentino.

This necklace and bracelet set is a beautiful example of their work, with curving centerpieces of deep red crystals interspersed with smokey ones. The necklace also has fine steel beads lining the edges. A double strand of clear crystals completes the necklace, while the bracelet has three strands.

  • Materials:

    Glass beads, brass backing, and small steel beads. The clear crystals on the necklace are strung on fine brass chain while the clear crystals on the bracelet are strung on string.

  • Size:

    The necklace is pproximately 16" long. The bracelet is 7-1/4" long.

  • Marks:

    "Made in Italy by Coppola e Toppo" on the necklace clasp; "Made Italy" (SIC) on one section of the necklace centerpiece; and "Made Italy" on the bracelet clasp and on the centerpiece of the bracelet.

  • Age:

    1960's or 70's

  • Condition:

    The steel beads that line the edges of the necklace centerpiece have rusted and there is some verdigris to the edges of the brass backing plate.

    One of the loops on the centerpiece of the bracelet broke off at some point in its past and a hole was drilled in the brass backing plate to hold one of the strands of crystal beads.

    These are noticeable under careful examination but don't affect the beauty of this set when worn.
