Sculpted faces, feathers, eyes, feet, plants, and the occasional goat embellish the links of this superb necklace by Pal Kepenyes.

In its monumental scale this necklace resembles the chains of office that are depicted in Renaissance paintings of royalty - think of the chain draped over the shoulders of Henry VIII in the famous Holbein portrait - but made modern and edgy by its imagery and construction. Like the chain in the portrait, this necklace can be worn draped on the shoulders; it can also be worn more conventionally draped in front, or less conventionally worn close to the neck and draped down the back. Because of its length (35"), it also can be worn as a belt, making it a versatile piece of art jewelry. 

Each of the decorative discs is individually attached to oval backing plates by a knobby pin, allowing each to rotate and move. 

Pal Kepenyes (1926-2021) is known for his sculpture and sculptural jewelry, most of which is created out of bronze, as is the case with this necklace. Though it has a free-form brutalist appearance this is deceptive: Kepenyes was a master of the controlling the drips and blobs of this style and in sculpting the figurative details that are evident in this necklace. Kepenyes was Hungarian-born but worked in Acapulco Mexico for several decades.
